The savage, treacherous streets of Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles is the garbage disposal of North America. Here the filthiest scum collect to scavenge for sustenance and methamphetamines. Our own private investigators sift through the waste of crack heads and misfits to find the most obscene, outlandish and unearthly VHS tapes the world has to offer. These are the Trash Tapes.
Talking about The Silencer is similar to attempting to describe a glimmer of light reflecting off a glass dildo hanging out of a dead hookers ass. The more you talk about it, the more confusing it gets; more confusing and more sexy. The story is so much bigger than just what you see. Every layer you peel back reveals more confusing elements to the puzzle of bizarreness that is this film.
The Silencer is half action movie, half softcore porn with a David Lynchian feel through out. Defining the film in any way will only confuse you more but it’s what I came here to do so I’ll give it a shot.
Angel is an assassin hired to kill the top bosses in a white slavery prostitution ring. After each kill she must connect back with her humanity by raping any man in the vicinity. The clues to each kill are hidden inside a videogame called The Silencer. Inside the video game also lives her ex-boyfriend/guardian angel who comes to life and stalks her from kill to kill.
This is about as much as I could figure out from watching the movie six or seven times and reading the back of the box. The reality is much stranger.
Nothing is explained to the viewer. Angel exists in some post-apocalyptic wasteland that we never fully get to see. All we know is the roads are dirt and the population is 90% hookers. Her “ex-boyfriend” is never really explained as an ex-boyfriend, some creepy stalker or a ghost. He stands in a completely black room and watches Angel’s life through a Silencer arcade machine. He shows up a few minutes late to every kill screaming her name and smelling her clothes. We have no idea what his motive is or who he is, only that he can communicate to her through televisions.
Half hour in you might mistake The Silencer for a very confusing action movie. Suddenly you’ll find yourself neck deep in a steamy sex scene that is drawn out to the point of being soft core porn. You’ll think you’ve nailed it down for what it REALLY is: a soft core porn with an elaborate plot. But by the end of the movie there are only two real sex scenes and only one scene where the main star, played by Lynette Walden, shows her amazing tities. Basically, The Silencer handles sex perfectly. It gives you one great sex scene early in the movie with some amazing nudity to get your masturbation out of the way so you can focus on the rest of the film. But what is The Silencer really? Perhaps no one will ever know.
The music only adds to the confusion. It is an amalgam of really bad love ballads, Twin Peaks style eerie elevator music and a midget accordion player who pops up throughout the movie.
The strangest part of The Silencer is the subtitle christian/positive message undertones through out. Yes, this is a movie about a super horny assassin. Never the less a lot of the characters wear crosses. Angel has this annoying subplot where she’s constantly trying to quit smoking and at one point has to dig through a dumpster to get her tobacco back. Angel makes it a point to say she wont have sex without a condom and the phrase, “No Glove, No Love” comes up TWICE in the film. Families even say grace at one point. Some how the final kill is her playing, basically herself, as an assassin nun killing a priest in a church. WHY?! HOW?!
The Silencer is ultimately the most eerie, David Lynch-like B Movie I’ve ever seen. By that I mean there are a lot of scenes with the fog machine blasting and accordion music played over confusing images. I didn't even mention the black girl runaway who is dressed like a boy and left at an old mans car shop to slowly devolve into an 1800's english shoe shiner. You never REALLY know what’s happening in The Silencer and that’s part of it’s brilliance. It’s a puzzle with no solution. A mess that you want to clean up. A piece of trash or a piece of heaven?
